Pad Magazine.
Dear Heidi,
I just wanted to write and let you know how inspiring your work
is. My sister and I are looking to get our names out there in the pin-up
world, and just looking at your shots have really gotten us on the right
track. You mentioned that in the beginning, you submitted photos you had
taken of yourself into photographers you wanted to collaborate with? I'm
taking your advice on this one. Hopefully I'll get a chance to meet you
one day and thank you for the kick-start!--Lauren
Lauren, you're welcome, honey! I wish you both all the best!
Have fun!!
Dear Heidi,
I want to get into pin-up modeling as a part-time, amateur sort
of thing, but I'm not of knockout true model quality as some of the girls
on the Java's site. I applied to a certain major pinup site and got accepted
but they require nudity in every photo set, which I'm not comfortable with
and isn't what pin-up's really about to me. Is there a niche for regular
pin-up girls who are definitely good at cheesecake, are nice looking and
have nice bodies but are not gorgeous models to do this? How should I get
started and where would I look? [I noticed another girl sent a picture
so here's one too, in case you need to say don't bother]
Thanks!--Roxy
Hey Roxy! First of all, I saw your pictures and you are crazy to think
someone would say to not bother! You are a doll! I'm sure you can do well
with it, you have a great look!
The best way to start is to contact local photographers and businesses
that use models, especially any who favor pin-up styles. Contact those
whose work you like and think you will be a good fit with. Building your
credits and experience will help you find your niche and hopefully you
will get to work with a quality make up artist and a photographer who is
good with lighting and you will look like a knockout, too! You'd be amazed
the difference a pro team makes on a shoot, with even the loveliest of
models!
Nudity should only be done if its right for you, not just to meet the
parameters of a website. I think you are right for following your instincts.
Part of the appeal of the pin-up style to many is that it's a classy version
of sexy, from an era when there was more tease and less, well...celebrity
crotch exposure. There are fans of all approaches to the genre, so do what
you enjoy and you'll be following the right pin-up path for you!
Love and Pin-Ups!

A little about Heidi: "I starting acting
in Texas at age 13, I have worked and trained as an actress in film, TV
& commercials for most of my life, as well as working behind the lens
on various projects. I have been shooting my own retro pinups since late
2003, when I started doing self-shot photos (just like Bunny
Yeager did!) with a self timer and a tripod in my home. Since
then, I've been on the cover of 3 books ("Hot Rod Pin Ups" by David
Perry and MBI Publishing, "How to Be a Dominant Diva" by Avalon
Press, and the new "Modern Vixens: World of Winytiki" by Octavio
Arizala and Goliath Press) as well as being featured on the
cover of 3 (and inside 2 other) Pin Up Calendars for 2007, magazine covers
and countless layouts, features and interviews in counter-culture publications,
as well as a few mainstream mags. I've gotten to work with tons of amazing
companies and photographers, including original pinup, pinup photographer
& living legend, Bunny Yeager--shooting on the same beach
where she and Bettie Page made
Pin Up history! Living in LA pursuing my acting, I've kept myself busy
on the side shooting the genre I love the most- and I'm thrilled to see
how the niche has grown and grown worldwide!" |
