"(Original Soundtrack) Austin
Powers"
Various Artists, 1997
One
of the most shag-adelic movie soundtrack releases to come out in a great
many years. Even though it's not directly a lounge record, you can find
bachelor pad favorites as well as modern artists who can claim their right
in the lounge heritage. First the classics: "Soul Bossa Nova" by Quincy
Jones and his Orchestra. Groovy, baby! Then there is the Burt Bacharach
standard seduction number "The Look of Love" done by ex-Bangles member
Susanna Hoffs. Speaking of Mr. Bacharach, this collection also includes
"What the World Needs Now Is Love" performed by ol' Burt himself with help
from the Posies. Oh, behave! There a nice spy-vs-spy track by the James
Taylor Quartet simply called "Austin's Theme" and the "The 'Shag-adelic'
Autin Powers Score Medley" composed and conducted by George S. Clinton.
On the modern front there's Brit-popper Edwyn Collins, the bubble-gum pop
band the Cardigans, and the super-sultry Divinyls. One song that should
not be overlooked it the British-Invasion-via-post-punk track "BBC" by
the outfit known as Ming Tea, which is in fact Mike Meyers himself with
help from guitar rocker Matthew Sweet and the previous mentioned Susanna
Hoffs. Smashing!
