Diana Dors, born Mavis Fluck, was considered England's
answer to Marilyn Monroe. From
the age of three, Dors knew that she wanted to be an actress
and started on that road by the age thirteen. Like fellow UK pin-ups Sabrina,
Pamela Green, and June Wilkinson,
Dors
knew that Hollywood was the place for her. She fit in well
with her blonde bombshell looks and sexy, attention-grabbing attitude--an
attitude seen here in this quote to the Associated British-Pathe, "I resented
being molded as the female Errol Flynn, but it was the way to become a
household word. I always wanted to be a glamorous Hollywood star with a
cream telephone. It couldn't be done with the films I was offered--so it
had to be done with glamour, extravagance, tiger-skin rugs, mink bikinis,
and sex appeal, I was the first homegrown sex symbol...rather like Britain's
naughty seaside postcards." She was a busy actress, appearing in no less
than six films in 1948. There were small roles and larger ones, A and B
films, but Dors kept working. By the time that other glamour
models/actresses had spent their lot and faded away, Dors
became a talented and prolific character actress well up unto her death
in the mid-80's.
