"Incredibly Strange Music, Vol.1"
Various Artists, 1993
The
companion to the book of the same name. When you want the best in bad music,
or anything on the fringe, you turn to the folks a RE/Search. This CD,
which, along with the book can be found at the RE/Search website, is well
worth your entertainment dollar. This disc contains an assortment of odd
cocktail tunes, hot-rod teen tunes, unusual classic renditions, exotica
and much, much more. The music and the artists who made it might be forgotten
today, but when you listen to the music you are struck with the creativity
these people had. The companion book gives you the stories behind the music--giving
you insight to who these people were and why they made the music they did.
If you can find it, also pick up Incredibly Strange Music, Vol. 2 (both
the book and CD). Two highlights of Incredibly Strange Music, Vol. 1 are
the sitar rendition of "Up, Up & Away" by Rajput & the Sepoy and
the stream-of-consciousness, neo-beat, audio LSD trip from Kali Bahlu,
"A Cosmic Telephone Call." She calls up god, and basically gets put on
hold.
