"I,
The Jury"
by Mickey Spillane
E. P. Dutton, 1947
What bachelor doesn't
love a hard-boiled detective story? A brutal soap opera of murder, guns,
and a woman who he makes love to and then has to shoot. How beautiful is
that? One of the all-time best when it comes to the hard boiled genre is
Mickey Spillane and his creation Mike Hammer.
I, The Jury was
the book that launched the Hammer franchise, and still one of the best.
Hammer fights dirty, loves hard, and has a real Hemmingway-esque view of
justice. Forget how the Hammer series went downhill. Forget the 80's tv
giggle/jiggle-fest. Forget even that the he-man character of Hammer is
anachronism is this post-modern, sensitive age (not to mention a certified
sociopath). He was cool like Bogart, and could kick anyone's ass.
