Femme Fatale: June McCall

June McCall    Born Billie June Palinkas, June McCall was a west coast, red-haired beauty who bore a striking resemblance to film starVeronica Lake. McCall started her pin-up career during her middle teens. By 16, she was budding into a beauty, well on the way to her adult 36-34-36 figure. Early on, she learned the pitfalls of unscrupulous photographers who would keep asking her to show a little more with each click of the camera. Bikini shots would become topless shots, topless shots would become nudes. McCall never seemed to feel comfortable with this progression and so after a while made it a point to do only non-nude cheesecake photos. Her experiences made her wary of those trying to take advantage of her good nature. Luckily for pin-up fans, this didn't end her modeling career. She just became more cautious of those people who said they could make her a star. Throughout the 1950's, she was one of Varga's cover girls and posed frequently for photographer Bernard of Hollywood, among others. In the early 1950's McCall won a national contest sponsored by a hosiery company. From then on, her trademark shot was her in fishnet stocking showing off her gorgeous gams.
By summer of 1951, McCall was a featured performer in Gypsy Rose Lee's all-star show at the Desert Inn in Las Vegas. From there, she went to Hollywood to try her hand as a budding starlet. But, as many beautiful girls found out, Hollywood was not an easy place for a girl with morals. In a article she wrote for Modern Man  (March 1957), she talked about how hard it was trying to stay a "good girl" in the world of casting couches and sleazy producers. (That issue also features her on the cover looking great in fishnets.) Maybe because she tried to stay good, or for a thousand other reasons, her acting career never took off. She was featured in a few films, mostly as an extra or in uncredited rolls. She also did a few television appearances during that era, but nothing that got her much notice. True to spirit, McCall remained a "good girl" all her life, until her death in 1990.
