Pad Magazine.
Hey Heidi,
I need your professional advice
& hope you can help me. As a model or photographer, when you send out
pictures to different magazines do you send all of the mags different pictures,
or do you send them all the same set of pics? I have several photos to
send out of a pin-up friend of mine who wants to get them into a mag &
I am sending them to several different magazines. Any Help you can give
me would be appreciated!
-Matt
Hey Matt!
It really depends on the magazine and whether
or not they are expecting the shots. If you are sending them all out on
spec, I'd send them out one at a time. A magazine often will have you sign
exclusivity for the set--so you won't be able to use them anywhere else
in print for 6 months (or whatever you agree to). If you've already sent
images from that set out to 15 other mags (and possibly already run in
some!) then some others won't even touch it. Send it to your top choices
first. Some mags will take 1 image, others will take 10-20 to choose from
for a layout, so go with the biggest bang for your buck first, then move
down your list--that way you don't kick yourself for giving it away to
a crappy, poorly printed mag when you could have been patient and gotten
paid for it to run in a bigger, better, nicer-looking publication! If none
of them mention exclusivity in your contracts and dealings, then send 'em
out all over! I'd start with sending them each one or two pics, wait to
see who bites, and those who contact you can see the rest of the set.
You might also want to consider creating a
place online to view the shots--that way you can keep them in low res form
for your own photo-safety but the editors can view several photos in one
place to consider for a layout, rather than having to open unknown email
attachments and dig through jpgs one by one. Flickr, myspace, or your own
website are good places for this, and I know there are tons more like them
if you look around online. Just send an email to the editor with
the link and address to the folder of images.
If you are doing a shoot for a specific mag,
they should give you the details. And don't forget to make sure you get
everything they ask for! You would rather they have more to choose from
and not use it all then not having your bases covered. I know of a shoot
for a car magazine where a new photographer shot the model in front of
the car but forgot to shoot ANY pics of the car itself! For a hot rod magazine!!
Never forget to consider who your audience is and what the editors expect
when you are shooting for a publication. Always communicate with the editor
and know what guidelines the magazines you are shooting for usually adhere
to.
GOOD LUCK!!

A little about Heidi: "I starting acting
in Texas at age 13, I have worked and trained as an actress in film, TV
& commercials for most of my life, as well as working behind the lens
on various projects. I have been shooting my own retro pinups since late
2003, when I started doing self-shot photos (just like Bunny
Yeager did!) with a self timer and a tripod in my home. Since
then, I've been on the cover of 3 books ("Hot Rod Pin Ups" by David
Perry and MBI Publishing, "How to Be a Dominant Diva" by Avalon
Press, and the new "Modern Vixens: World of Winytiki" by Octavio
Arizala and Goliath Press) as well as being featured in many
pin-up calendars, magazine covers and countless layouts, features and interviews
in counter-culture publications, as well as a few mainstream mags. I've
gotten to work with tons of amazing companies and photographers, including
original pinup, pinup photographer & living legend, Bunny Yeager--shooting
on the same beach where she and Bettie Page
made Pin Up history! Living in LA pursuing my acting, I've kept myself
busy on the side shooting the genre I love the most- and I'm thrilled to
see how the niche has grown and grown worldwide!" |
