Recession Era Rates
For the pin-up on the rise who has shot with
professional photographers and been in publications, the question of your
“rate” is certain to come up and something to think about. For every model
you ask, you will get a different answer, but usually there is some standard
“going” rates for what companies in the same niche of the industry are
paying for print models.
You can often hear from other models what
they earn on certain jobs or see casting notices that show rates. As the
recession hits, it is reflected in the going rates and the types of jobs
that are available for pin-up or alternative models. While there are many
more companies adopting a pin-up-friendly marketing approach for ads, there
are also exponentially more girls giving it a shot and that means more
newcomers willing to work for free.
If a business has their ad money dry up, there
is no budget for a professional, and often there is no option but going
to free or trade shoots and using less known models. On one hand, it shifts
who is working with pros and what jobs are coveted. On the other, it gives
newcomers the exposure and possible break they need to become the next
star. To be successful, you have to be promoting yourself and looking
for new ways to make yourself marketable to potential clients, as well
as keeping a public contact with your fans via online sites and/or events.
We all have had to look to other areas of
our experience and talents to be not just new streams of income, but new
chances to explore and grow and learn. So while you should be aware of
the way the recession affects our business, look at it as a chance to start
new opportunities and get a chance to learn a new aspect of this (or another)
industry you maybe wouldn’t have considered before. You might end up finding
the key to your success or a change in your life you didn’t know you needed.
Afterall, while the current economic state is kinda crappy, nothin’ makes
flowers grow like fertilizer, right? See this as the beginning of the next,
better part of your life, and let’s all keep growing.

A little about Heidi: "I starting acting
in Texas at age 13, I have worked and trained as an actress in film, TV
& commercials for most of my life, as well as working behind the lens
on various projects. I have been shooting my own retro pinups since late
2003, when I started doing self-shot photos (just like Bunny
Yeager did!) with a self timer and a tripod in my home. Since
then, I've been on the cover of 3 books ("Hot Rod Pin Ups" by David
Perry and MBI Publishing, "How to Be a Dominant Diva" by Avalon
Press, and the new "Modern Vixens: World of Winytiki" by Octavio
Arizala and Goliath Press) as well as being featured in many
pin-up calendars, magazine covers and countless layouts, features and interviews
in counter-culture publications, as well as a few mainstream mags. I've
gotten to work with tons of amazing companies and photographers, including
original pinup, pinup photographer & living legend, Bunny Yeager--shooting
on the same beach where she and Bettie Page
made Pin Up history! Living in LA pursuing my acting, I've kept myself
busy on the side shooting the genre I love the most- and I'm thrilled to
see how the niche has grown and grown worldwide!" |
