With June Palmer we see a transition from the classic
pin-up glamour girl of the 1950's to the "tit queens" of the 1960's and
70's. That's not to say the 1950's bachelor was not obsessed with the bosom,
but once we get into the mid-1960's the playfulness found in earlier pin-up
photos is replaced with an overt sexuality. This of course is due to the
budding sexual revolution and the general change society was going through
during that time.
Palmer, a British-born beauty,started
her modeling career in 1959 while in her late teens. She had that classic
girl-next-door look, but when that measuring tape read 38-23-37, there
was no denying her Va-Va-Voom quality. Photographer
Irv Carsten
said this about Palmer in the March 1962 issue of Modern
Man, "I felt ashamed using an automatic camera. Her posing is second
nature, she's beautiful from any angle, and without camera settings to
make, there's nothing to do but watch."
Her popularity spanned both sides of the Atlantic
due in a large part to the work of the famed photographer
George
Harrison Marks. Besides Palmer, Mark's
models included a who's-who of 1960's UK pin-up dolls including Pamela
Green, Paula Page, Lorraine Burnett,
Vicky
Kennedy, and Marie Devereux. These women followed
in the footsteps of other famed British bombshells like Sabrina,
Diana
Dors, and June Wilkinson.
Palmer continued posing for men's magazines through
the late 60's, then became a camera club cutie. She also appeared in a
few nutie-cutie shorts and films including "The Naked World of Harrison
Marks." In 1977, when she was 37, she returned to the magazine
pages posing for an amazing nude photo shoot for Mayfair magazine. Today,
pin-up fans have rediscovered Palmer and the rest of Harrison
Mark's British beauties, putting them on par with America's batch
of classic glamour gals.
