"Va
Va Voom!"
by Steve Sullivan
Rhino, 1995
Nobody has covered the
realm of the pin-up as well as Steve Sullivan. This collection
puts a history and personality behind all the classic glamour girls of
the 50's and 60's. He covers everyone from movie bombshells, to pin-up
models, to the burlesque performers. Each featured woman has an in-depth
write-up as well as expanded lists of their film and pictorial career.
Two women dominate this book; Marilyn Monroe
and Bettie Page. He argues that
Monroe was not only the archetype for the blonde bombshell,
but also set the standards for glamour models in the the golden age of
the pin-up. As for Page, Sullivan says she
is the only one who could have rivaled Monroe for title of
Queen of the Pin-up. Whereas Monroe had her Hollywood career
to bolster her image, Page created her myth by photo alone.
Monroe was glitter, Page was the girl next door.
Sullivan spends a good amount of time exploring
Page's
brief career and the cult that grew up around her. Other women featured
in this book include Jayne Mansfield,
Mamie
Van Doren,
Julie Newmar,
Bunny
Yeager,
Tempest Storm,
and Lil St. Cyr.
